The answer: You are never too old, or young to become a writer.
Writers come in all ages
Ever thought about being a writer? Hey, me too! At a young age I loved telling and writing stories. But my most favorite of all was listening to stories. It’s probably the reason that even now I still love having stories read to me. When I happen upon a really good book I find myself reading out loud just to hear the words. There’s a free tip about how to catch more typos as well. Anyway . . .
What does any of this have to do with being too old or young to write a book?
Even though I loved writing stories when I was younger, there was never really any encouragement towards it. Life moves on as it has a tendency to and we refocus on the things we think are important to us at the moment. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with that. We all need to make a living. However, that doesn’t mean that we need to give up or push aside the things we love to do.
Since starting Loconeal Publishing, I’ve had the honor of working with first-time authors as young as ten-years-old up to . . . well, I can’t really say their age online here because they may be reading this post and not appreciate it. Let’s just say that their kids and I could be about the same age.
It is never too late to start writing. Below is a small list of published authors to illustrate my point. Some of their stories may have been published later, but my intent here is to note when they wrote it. There are some younger, and some older. But you get the idea.
The point is to not quit before you ever get started. Don’t wait until you have some sort of literary degree to get those stories out of your head. If a story suddenly and inexplicably comes to you now, then write it! So what if you’ve never thought of writing a story before.
What I do know
I’ve worked with a grade-school student telling a story about how one wish brought color and hope back into the world. It brought tears to my eyes then, and a little bit now as I remember it. I’ve worked with a 73-year-old stroke survivor as we chronicled the memories of his life from essays and stories that he couldn’t even remember writing.
There is no perfect age to become a writer, only a perfect time. Now!
